That should read, “Rules for Dating!” I bet most of you didn’t even know there were rules for dating that cover everything from the first kiss to what kind of present would be appropriate for that first momentous occasion, i.e.: birthday, Christmas, etc. Somehow the ladies know these rules, most likely the dating regulations were discussed that day when they pulled all the girls out of Health class and marched them off to the nurse’s office for a secret meeting.
For some reason this information wasn’t passed along to the guys but there is one rule that I stumbled upon and felt worth sharing. For example; if you have been dating for less than six months it is considered, according to the rules, inappropriate to buy your new gal jewelry. There is a reason for this—it may give the impression that you are a big spender, or worse, ready to take the relationship to a higher level. On the other hand it is perfectly okay to give the lady a bottle of perfume, which to me sends a far less romantic message and might even be downright insulting.
In my opinion, if you really want to play it safe and don’t want to offend nor encourage your girlfriend with that first gift, it has been my experience that tickets to a ballgame work best. Not only does it show her that you enjoy spending time with her, you can have beer and hotdogs for dinner without coming across as a lumberheaded lout.
