a mother's question

My Picture

Often while driving, I have a poem or thought run through my head and wish I had a tape recorder to record what I'm  thinking. I have always loved poetry but never really got into it. However, I picked up a copy of David Kirby's book, "Writing Poetry" and loved it. He states that it is not necessary to rhyme or to follow any set pattern in modern poetry. But that it is important to convey a feeling or image in order for it to be poetry. I hope my attempt at Free Verse will evoke an image in your mind. Perhaps only mothers can see it

A Mother's Question

Looking up to see his smile
This man --so strong, all grown
He was my child
Attuned now to his own world
A wife and two sons at his side
Too busy to look behind.

Once a cherub with blonde curls
Always at my feet
Master of a tiny toy truck world
Never straying far
Glancing up for Mommy's approval
Needing me to be there.

When did his need become mine?
