My Picture
This is an excellent example of how todays working grandmothers handle jobs, families and still be great grandma's... It was a hectic morning! I normally organize things the night before but with only 3 hours of sleep yesterday after a string of night shifts and keeping seven little boys last night (I had Bubba & Weldon until about 9:30). I figured I'd go on to bed and get up early. Well let me tell you it don't matter what time you get up with five little boys it aint early enough! We got off to a good start, everyone was up at the crack of dawn. I started breakfast, waffles & sausage, organizing 5 cups with Ovaltine powder ready to pour up the milk and place on the table along side of their plates. I was feeling very organized and actually quite proud of my self. Everyone polished off their food, some requiring seconds. Everyone was dressed at this point except shoes & socks. Well this is where the trouble started. After a massive hunt we got everyone's feet dressed. All except Weston, he had hiking boots and I don't know who tied the double knot in his left boot but it was not coming out. Of course it was cinched up too tight for him to just slip his foot in without getting it untied. We were about to start out the door when I realized a couple of the boys had "bed hair". We rushed to the bathroom wetting down their hair and giving a quick blow dry. After the maze of backpacks and notebook were sorted through I scooped up Weston with one boot on, one off. We loaded in the van. On the way I had to pick up Bubba. Unfortunately there was a car seat in the car and trying to put one of the boys in it was like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. I unstrapped the car seat & stuck it in the only available space I could find. Finally everyone was strapped in. At this point my blood pressure was rising and my heart was racing. We have got to make it on time! Some of the kids have perfect attendance and I sure didn't want to be responsible for them losing that prestigious standing. We got to the school and the traffic was moving at about the speed of a hair ball going down a clogged drain. With my quick thinking I decided to whip around to the back of the school. I made my way up to the back of the cafeteria which was close proximity to most of the classrooms. I jumped out, ran around and started unloading kids. Back packs and note books were again strewn everywhere. Everyone was able to find their own and start jumping out of the van. I was thinking "we're going to make it!" as my heart continued to race. Then I realized Weston still had one boot on and one off. That durn knot would not come out! Again I swooped him up while everyone was standing beside the van and causing a little bit of a traffic jam. We were about to take off for the building when I got a glimpse of a blue note book in the very back seat of the van. Dustin made a jump that superman would have been proud of and retrieved it (my hero!) Now things were looking up. We took off in a trot, with me carrying Weston, Bubba in tow and Austin chasing off after the older boys. Everyone hit their perspective doors. Austin was lost in the crowd. I just hoped and prayed I would see him again. I got Bubba dropped off and still lugging Weston, huffing and puffing by this point and made it down the hall to his class with the knot of steel still tied in his boot. Thank goodness his teacher had a little table outside her door and on it a pencil holder with a pair of pointed scissors. After a quick surgical procedure on that durn knot I was able to free the lace and retie them. Everyone got to class on time and suddenly appeared Austin, thank God because I had kind of forgotten about him by this point. Austin & I loaded up in the van and headed home. We drove in the driveway and I said ok buddy, hop out. He said, "why? we aren't in a hurry now". I said you can get out when you like but I'm going inside for my WELL DESERVED cup of coffee! And this is how my morning went! Have a GREAT weekend! Love ya, Deb
