This is the prologue to my second novel in the Kip Yardley series. Comments appreciated. Copyright 2006 Jeremy Savage arrived early at the job site. That’s why it was he who found the body. At first glance he thought one of the workers had spent the late evening hours the day before drinking and had simply decided to sleep it off on the job site instead of going home. He was just going to wake the guy up. When he got near the body, he noticed it was his friend, Joe Parrott. He had served in Viet Nam with Joe. “Joe, get your ass up, man, it’s nearly time to go back to work!” Joe didn’t answer, and didn’t stir. Jeremy Savage touched the corpse with the toe of his boot and nudged. “Get the hell up, Joe!” Joe still didn’t move. Savage placed the toe of his boot firmly under the shoulder of his friend, raised and pushed at the same time. The body of Joe Parrott rolled over to reveal a small hole in the middle of his forehead. Under the body the sand had turned a reddish brown.. Savage still didn’t realize what he had found. He bent and gazed into the dead eyes of his friend and for the first time noticed the blood on his friend’s face and the bullet hole in his forehead. “Damn!” he yelled and jumped back like he had stepped on a rattlesnake. He ran as fast as he could back to his car, grabbed his cell phone and called 911.
