An Interesting Experience

My Picture

In early November I was invited to talk to a group of Japanese women about lifelong learning.  They were in this country taking an Elderhostel program.  During the program they visited a beautiful continuing care community, the Lathrop Retirement Community, a Kendal Corporation affiliate, in Easthampton, Massachusetts.  I drove out to Easthampton to meet them before they went off to explore the Norman Rockwell Museum.

After a delightful lunch, I spoke with the group for about 20 minutes through an interpreter.  Since I had sent her my talk ahead of time, she was ready to work with me.  After each section I would pause and wait for her to interpret what I had just said.  That was very different from what I usually do but very interesting.

The audience was most responsive and even asked questions, again through the interpreter.  At the end about half a dozen came up and presented me with little gifts, which is a Japanese custom.

My office is now decorated with some new items – wall hangings, Origami dolls and several beautiful scarves.  What a delight to look around and be reminded of my time with these visitors from Japan.
