My Picture
This is me in my first staff deejay position at radio station WJER in Dover, Ohio. I was 21. It was 1967. I spent most of my early life on the radio. I used to joke that I had "the perfect face for radio." (No. I did make that up. Someone back in the 40s did.)
Hard to believe this picture was taken FORTY years ago.
In the booth immediately in front of me, once an hour, newsman Rex Ridenour would come in, wearing a fedora, smoking a cigarette and frowning and do the news for five minutes, then disappear down the hall for another 55 minutes.
The man who hired me, John Schon, was really nice even if he did do a Polka show in the morning. We also had a Swiss music show each morning. I made history later that month when I started playing rock and roll on a special show for teens. We held a contest to name it and the winner was.... SPINDIG!
Those were the days.
